During the first five episodes of Dragon HouseKing Viserys’ health is steadily deteriorating. A form of leprosy saw him slowly die as the series continued, losing his fingers and exacerbated by the episode. It is clear to all viewers that he does not have long to live. Just how long, though, remains to be seen. The final moments of Sunday’s final episode, “We Light the Way,” have brought more questions about the King of the Seven Kingdoms.

“We Light the Way” deals heavily with the wedding between Rhaenyra and Laenor. A great wedding feast ends in tragedy, as Kriston Cole kills Lenore’s lover, Joffrey. After those events, the Targaryens and the Velaryons gather for a small, private wedding. Once Rhaenyra and Laenor exchange vows, Viserys breaks down and the episode ends.
Viserys’ health is worse than ever in this episode, so it looks like his life is about to end. There is also significance to seeing Rhaenrya consolidate her claim to the Iron Throne before possible death. Looks like it’s time for him to go.
Is King Viserys dead?
We don’t know for sure if this is the end of King Viserys on the show, but we have an idea based on George R.R. Martin’s fire and blood. The book tells the history of House Targaryen and details the death of King Viserys. In the book, Viserys dies in his sleep as his children grow up, potentially at the hands of his wife, Alicent. This may indicate that he is not dead at this point in the series.
However, the show has actually changed some details about the book. The death of King Viserys is the important part, as it sets in motion the events that led to the war between his children, Rhaenyra and Aegon II. Given how much could happen this season, it seems safe to believe that Viserys will continue. For a little longer, at least.
